Belize is a small independent nation in Central America about the size of Massachusetts lying south of the Yucatan Peninsula, east of Guatemala and north of Honduras. The coast of Belize is protected by the longest barrier reef in the western hemisphere. Lying inside the reef are literally hundreds of small cayes (islands), virtually all of which are fringed with coral. Belize received its independence from Great Britain on September 21, 1981 and today is a self-governing, two party democracy with a parliamentary system of government similar to that of England. The interior of Belize is primarily forest and jungle, with a mountainous region to the south. Remnants of the Mayan civilization can be found scattered throughout the country with many ruins, the great majority of which remain virtually untouched.
The climate of Belize is classified as tropical with pronounced wet and dry seasons. The rainy season corresponds to hurricane season and extends from May through November. The dry season is from December through April with lower humidity due to the tempering breezes off the Caribbean Sea. For the outdoor enthusiast, Belize presents unlimited opportunities. Popular activities include diving, snorkeling, fishing, hiking, and exploring nature at its best.
